Potomac field notes01 / Riverbank
The Virginia shore

Low water

At dusk, the river leaves a second shoreline written in silt, tangled grass, and the pale backs of stones.

Along the bank

From the path, the water looks almost still. Closer to the bank, little seams of current slide between the exposed stones. Leaves collect in the quiet pockets and turn once before drifting out again.

The last light stays on the far side of the river. By the time it fades, the stones underfoot are the only things still warm.
